National Board of Echocardiography and Inteleos Form Cardiovascular Imaging Coalition to Launch Innovative Multimodality Certification Program

RALEIGH, NC, February 21, 2025 – The National Board of Echocardiography (NBE) and Inteleos have established the Cardiovascular Imaging Coalition (CVIC) to streamline the maintenance of certification (MOC) process for physicians specializing in multiple cardiac imaging modalities. This groundbreaking initiative addresses the challenges of time and expense physicians face in maintaining multiple certifications across cardiovascular computed tomography (CT), nuclear cardiology (NC), cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), and echocardiography.

The CVIC is developing an integrated, case-based MOC process that will provide immediate feedback and learning opportunities to enhance patient care. While this new program is under early development, NBE will continue to offer its annual longitudinal assessment process for Maintenance of Certification in Echocardiography (MOCE), ensuring flexibility for physicians who specialize in single imaging modalities. Additionally, Inteleos will enhance its MOC experience for physicians certified in individual cardiovascular imaging specialties.

“We are thrilled to help physicians who use multiple cardiovascular imaging modalities streamline their certification maintenance process,” says NBE President Roberto Lang, MD.

Luciana Young, MD, Chair of the Inteleos Board of Directors, adds, “Inteleos is committed to modernizing cardiovascular imaging certification maintenance through the CVIC, implementing meaningful evaluations that reflect the daily practice of multimodality imagers.”

In Memoriam, James Kirkpatrick, MD, FASE

The National Board of Echocardiography Board of Directors, ASCeXAM Writing Committee, physician volunteers, and staff are mourning the loss of James Kirkpatrick, MD, FASE. With profound sadness, we share Dr. Kirkpatrick’s unexpected passing on January 1, 2025. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

In 2006, Dr. Kirkpatrick achieved NBE Testamur status by passing the ASCeXAM® Examination of Special Competence in Adult Echocardiography. That same year, he earned NBE Diplomate status, which he upheld with distinction until his passing. Most recently, Dr. Kirkpatrick served as an invaluable contributor and dedicated member of the ASCeXAM Writing Committee, leaving an enduring impact on the field and all who worked alongside him. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.

“As a luminary in clinical echocardiography and in medical education, Dr. Kirkpatrick served on the National Board of Echocardiography ASCExAM Writing Committee from 2022-2025. While on this Committee, Dr. Kirkpatrick played a leading role creating the content for the transition from recertification exam to a maintenance of certification program. He was valued deeply by his colleagues for his commitment to use education and learning to improve patient care. Above all else, he will be remembered by his colleagues for his integrity, humble nature, wit, humor, and his kindness. ”
