The National Board of Echocardiography (NBE) Board of Directors is profoundly saddened to announce the passing of our beloved and esteemed President, Roberto M. Lang, MD.
Dr. Lang was a visionary leader, a dedicated physician, and a tireless advocate for the advancement of excellence in echocardiography. He served as the A.J. Carlson Professor of Medicine in the Section of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he also directed the Noninvasive Cardiac Imaging Laboratories.
A pioneer in the field and passionate educator and mentor, Dr. Lang passed the ASCeXAM® in 1996 and became one of the first physicians certified by NBE in 2001. He joined the ASCeXAM Writing Committee in 2010 and was elected to the Board of Directors in 2014. He most recently served as NBE President beginning in 2023, following terms as President-Elect and Secretary/Treasurer. He led our outreach efforts in South America for over eight years in partnership with SISIAC, helping to expand access to high-quality echocardiographic education and certification throughout the region.

In his own words, “I completely share the NBE vision of attaining excellence in echocardiography through NBE certification for the assessment of this recognition.”
In addition to generously sharing his time and expertise with numerous organizations, he also served as President of the American Society of Echocardiography from 2009 to 2010. Dr. Lang’s leadership, humility, and dedication leave an indelible mark on our organization and the global echocardiography community. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and countless friends worldwide.
Today we lost a colleague, friend, and mentor in cardiology. He will be sorely missed.
