Purpose

The purposes of the certification process are to:

  • establish the domain of the practice of echocardiography for the purpose of certification,
  • assess the level of knowledge demonstrated by a licensed physician practitioner of echocardiography in a valid manner,
  • enhance the quality of echocardiography and individual professional growth in echocardiography,
  • formally recognize individuals who satisfy the requirements set by the NBE, and
  • serve the public by encouraging quality patient care in the practice of echocardiography.

Levels of Certification

Certification is offered in

  • Transthoracic 2-D and Doppler Echocardiography interpretation alone (t),
  • Transesophageal Echocardiography (e),
  • Transthoracic plus Transesophageal Echocardiography (te),
  • Transthoracic plus Stress Echocardiography (ts), or
  • Comprehensive (c) which includes all three procedures above.
  • Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography
  • Basic Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography

Physicians who have been certified in Transthoracic Echocardiography (or higher) by the NBE may apply for additional certification once their level of service meets the minimum requirements.

General Requirements for Certification

The following are general requirements only—see 2013 ASCeXAM Certification Requirements and 2013 Advanced PTEeXAM Certification Requirements for specific information.

  1. Testamur of an Examination of Special Competence administered by the NBE.
  2. Current License to Practice Medicine at the time of application.
  3. Current Medical board Certification.
  4. Specific Training in Cardiovascular Disease.
  5. Specific Training in Echocardiography.

General Requirements for Recertification

The following are general requirements only - see 2013 ReASCE Recertification Requirements and 2013 RePTE Recertification Requirements for specific information.

  1. Pass a Recertification Examination administered by the NBE.
  2. Diplomate of the NBE (Initial Certification in the last 10 years)
  3. Current License to Practice Medicine at the time of application.
  4. Continued Maintenance of Skills in Echocardiography
  5. Continuing Medical Education Specific to Echocardiography
